One of the most useful Firefox plug-ins I use at Firefox browser is SearchStatus. It is the great tool for SEO/SEM (I also like very much SEO Quake in Google Results), but I use it most for the evaluation of the Web sites I found interesting, but I do not know much about them yet.
In new version, this tool includes the visual manifestation of Compete site rankings, beside standard Google PR and Alexa Rating. Compete rank is interesting in many ways, but the most interesting for me is the estimation of the number of unique visitors per day (it can be seen on SearchStatus with the right click on the Compete bar).
As I tested for the several sites I know the exact number of visitors, the results are mostly very similar to the real numbers (of course, that is only the estimation, or indicative value). In addition, for me it is very interesting to determine if the site is not older then one or two years, because Compete ratings are given only for older Web sites.
To conclude, I recommend SearchStatus even more after they implemented Compete rankings.

You maybe seen SEO tool SEO Score, which analyze the technical aspects of on-site SEO. You can analyze plenty of sites through the URL http://whois.domaintools.com/yoursite.com.
It is interesting to see if you hired real expert in on-site SEO, or you still have the problems.
For example, this Web site (WordPress, and I did nothing on technical SEO aspects) has SEO Score 73%. But, my main Web site - Pretraga.co.yu has SEO Score 94% (My programmer did the great job). I assisted in on-site SEO consulting for Poslovnimagazin.biz site (business news), and SEO Score is 92%.
Some people say this is not relevant, or opposite.
Of course, that Whois Tool (where SEO Score is only the part of the provided services) from DomainTools.com is really interesting.

There are several site popularity tools, very widely used for the web site reputation calculation - Google PR, Alexa, Netcraft, etc.
Text Link Ads service is known for very good affiliate program, as well as for 100 $US credit on their Google PR link building service. It has very interesting free blog popularity tool - TLA Blog Juice Rank (Score).
Blog Juice Score is interesting mashup service which combines four rating services:
1. Approximate number of Bloglines subscribers. 30% of the complete score.
2. Alexa rank of the site. 15% of the complete score.
3. Technorati rank of the site. 30% of the complete score.
4. Technorati inbound links for the site. 15% of the complete score.
The range of this score is from 0 to 10. For example, the score of the famous site Alistapart.com is TLA 9.3. For this site, the TLA Blog Juice Score is TLA 1.8.
In my opinion this is very interesting rank system, and it is better than variety of single ranking systems like I mentioned at the beginning of this blog post. I already heard that some bloggers will create the top lists of popular blogs, based upon TLA Blog Juice Score.
The future of reputable free web site ranking systems is in the mashup services like TLA Blog Juice.
Site Value Report Mashup
Interesting list of services can be found at DNSCoop.com. This service combines several ranking tools, but almost all of them are practically listed and not mixed in the services with new value (e.g. domain age, Google PR, Alexa Rank…). The part of this service which is pretty interesting is Site Value Report.
Site Value Report “is calculated based on several factors shown above, including: Links, Traffic (Alexa), age of the domain, site category, domain keyword popularity, and overall occurrences of the domain name on the web.”
I am sure that in the next period of time we will see more good web site ranking tools, created as the new value from a current publicly available ranking services.

Recently I found very useful service Page2RSS, which enables RSS subscriptions to the pages without RSS feature.

The service is very simple - there is only need to paste the Web page URL, and on the next service’s page there is the RSS url which is traceable with RSS readers.
The result on the reader shows is there any changes. Sometimes this does not work very well because sites use flash or use visitor’s counters, current time etc.

From the moment when Wikipedia introduced its external link icon (
), it is matter of time (my estimation is next 12 months) when that effect will become de facto standard. It will happen when NYTimes.com introduce external link icon on its Web pages.
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 state:
“Clearly identify the target of each link. [Priority 2] Link text (The rendered text content of a link) should be meaningful enough to make sense when read out of context — either on its own or as part of a sequence of links. Link text should also be terse.”
Depending on how this checkpoint is read, this could mean that every external link should be identified within the link text itself. For example, you could use “(off-site link)” or “(external link)” within any link text that points to any external resource. (cited from Max Design)
Web text linking and the Web credibility
The best practice on the Web shows that it is recommended to identify the external link on the Web page text, because user has to be clearly informed where he (she) will go after the click on that link (somewhere inside the same site, or somewhere outside).
In addition, Wikipedia example of external link icon shows that the trend of the credible web sources is to use those kind of icons (in my opinion very similar icon will become de facto standard), in order to clearly stated where the site visitor will go after the click on a link.
WP and the external link icons
Many open source CMSs have external link icons plugin, and for the WordPress there are some plugins:
- Link Indicator Plugin
- Identify External Links Plugin
